Probiotics for Pets
Learn how probiotics support digestion, immunity, and gut balance in dogs and cats.
What it is
Probiotics are live, beneficial bacteria that help maintain a healthy balance of microorganisms in the digestive tract. Common pet probiotic strains include Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus, and Bacillus coagulans. Some products also include prebiotics, which are fibers that feed the good bacteria.
How it can help
Probiotics support digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function. They can be especially helpful after antibiotics, during food transitions, or in stressful situations like travel or boarding. Some pets also experience improvement in skin allergies and overall energy when their gut microbiome is balanced.
What to look for
Choose a product with clearly listed strains and a reasonable CFU count, usually measured in billions. Multi-strain formulas often provide broader support. Check whether the product needs refrigeration or is shelf-stable, and pay attention to expiration dates. Probiotics lose potency over time, especially if stored improperly.
Safety tips
Start with the recommended dose and introduce gradually if your pet has a sensitive stomach. Give probiotics with food when possible. If your pet is immunocompromised, very young, very old, or seriously ill, ask your vet before starting.
When to talk to your vet
See your veterinarian if digestive symptoms last more than a couple of days, include blood, or are accompanied by lethargy or vomiting. Chronic digestive issues may require diagnostic testing rather than supplement support alone.
When in doubt, ask your vet
Every pet is different. This guide is for general education only. Always consult your veterinarian before starting a new supplement, especially if your pet has a health condition or takes medication.
